The NFL has
changed a lot over the past few decades, they have become more of a money
driven company. So when you become the most popular sport in America and have a
firm grip on it what’s next? Expansion, many companies that become successful
in their region expand bigger and bigger until they have covered the world. Ex
Apple, everyone in the world knows what an IPhone is.
I believe that the
NFL wants to move to London for a few different reasons. One is London is a
secure and safe place for Americans. Two London is relatively close to America.
Three is that London is in the EU and that allows people from all over Europe to
travel to see games. With a constant fan base you will always have tickets to
sell, and with limited games you will always have high demand for tickets.
Along with ticket sales you now have an entire region where you can provide TV
coverage. The money starts to flow once you sell the NFL network to all of Europe
and fans begin to watch games in America. The NFL would also make money on commercials
shown on American networks as well as commercials on European networks.
This
may sound like a great plan to make money and bring the American sport worldwide,
but there are a few major consequences to this plan. First off the player’s
performance will be affected due to the fact that they have to travel so far. The
risky thing about this is that it can lead to injury and end up costing your
program more money than you can earn. The next issue is that the time
difference between America and really anywhere else in the world is very
different. I living in Hawaii have to wake up 6 in the morning just to watch
games played on the east coast. This made it hard for me to catch the games all
the time. If the games were aired in Europe and the 49ers hosted a night game
you could imagine that people in Europe would have to wake up at around 3 or 4
am just to view the game. This make TV sales difficult. For the amount of money
that the NFL could actually make is questionable due to the fact of all these
negatives. This would be a great move for the NFL financially if they were able
to work out some of the kinks
